FREMONT -- A head-on collision on U.S. 117, just north of Fremont, killed a Lucama woman and a South Carolina man about 9:30 Saturday night.

Donna Jean Braman, 53, of Greg Swamp Loop, and James Richard Govan, 51, of Summerville, S.C., were the only occupants in the two vehicles.

State Highway Patrol Officials said Govan drove a Ford Focus across the center line striking the Toyota Yaris driven Ms. Braman.

Officials with the Highway Patrol said Govan is believed to have been exceeding the speed limit at the time of the collision.

The force of the impact was so great that the Toyota was knocked off the road, coming to rest in a yard on the east side of the highway.

After colliding, the two vehicles came to a stop about 100 feet apart. The Focus became engulfed in flames following the accident.

The Highway Patrol, Fremont Volunteer Fire Department, Fremont Police Department and Wayne County Emergency Medical Services responded to the emergency call.
