Goldsboro police are investigating a break-in at the home of Nora Smith, 78, of Seaboard Street. Police said that someone had broken into the home doing $1,600 in damages to a breaker box and $150 in damages to a section of drywall. A small amount of copper tubing was stolen, but has been recovered.
Fire reports
The Goldsboro Fire Department responded to 36 calls the week of the June 17 to June 23.
Of the calls made, 28 incidents were not fire related, which included:
*10 medical assists
*9 false alarm calls
*6 vehicle accidents
*3 police or other agency assists
Only one of the calls made by the department included a structure fire, which occurred in the kitchen of La Paz restaurant at 335 North Spence Street at 9:54 a.m. on June 22.
According to the incident report, the cause of the fire appeared to started when a crew contracted to clean the hood system above the cooking range had positioned a pressure washer they were using too close to combustible products.
The report continues that the pressure washer ignited paper material that melted the gas line on the pressure washer, which resulted in a gas leak with ignition and enough temperature to set off on sprinkler head.
The sprinkler head extinguished the fire before firefighters arrive.
Firefighters removed the water from the scene and conducted salvage work to restore the property. Firefighters cleared the scene in under 90 minutes.
The seven other nonstructural fire calls included one vehicle fire, one clothes dryer fire, two grass fires and three crop fires.
The crop fire, located near the intersection of East Ash Street and N.C. 111. included about 15 hay bales in a hay field, firefighters said.
The hay bales required three calls from firefighters on three consecutive days.
The North Carolina Forest Service has banned all open burning and canceled all burning permits effective on June 22 for 27 counties, including Wayne County, according to the organization's website.
The ban on open burning will be in effect until further notice.
