Longtime doctor Durwood Tyndall died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Dr. Tyndall, 85, practiced family medicine in Goldsboro for almost 40 years, working with his son-in-law, Dr. Howard Newell, for nine years before retiring.

He was president of the Wayne County Medical Society, and a longtime member of Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Local attorney Dortch Langston was a friend of Dr. Tyndall for 50 years, and said that Wayne County has lost someone special with Dr. Tyndall's death.

"He was a humble, soft-spoken Southern gentleman, who showed great kindness and compassion for his patients and fellow man," Langston said. "He was a hardworking doctor who put his patients first in his life."

Langston described Tyndall's home as going back into the old South. "The flowers and grounds and just the way the home was kept was like the old South," he said.

Another member of the medical community, who knew Dr. Tyndall for a long time, is Dr. Joe McLamb.

"He was an outstanding physician and a very fine gentleman," McLamb said. "We're going to miss him in the medical community as well as Golden K Kiwanis."

To further the medical field, Dr. Tyndall donated his body to the University of North Carolina Medical School.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with visitation after the service.
