A woman was killed on U.S. 70 East Saturday night while attempting to cross the roadway on foot around 9:30.
Tammy Ferrell, 39, of West Grantham Street, was pronounced dead at Wayne Memorial Hospital after she was struck by an 18-wheeler.
Albert Lee Mayhue, 43, North Clairborne Street, was driving the tractor trailer that came to a stop in a jack-knife position near I-795 between the Economy Inn and the U.S. 117 overpass.
Authorities are not sure why Ms. Ferrell was walking on the highway near her home, said Goldsboro police Capt. T.J. Chiero.
Traffic on U.S. 70 East was diverted from around 9:25 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. as Goldsboro police processed the scene.
Chiero said Mayhue had attempted to avoid Ms. Ferrell and slowed the tractor trailer to an estimated 23 mph before making contact with Ferrell.
At this time in the ongoing investigation, there are no charges pending against Mayhue, Chiero said.
