The first scholarship from money raised through Dancing Stars of Wayne County will be presented to a graduating high school senior next month.

Applications for the $1,000 scholarship have been sent to area public and private high school counselors, and home-schooled seniors are also encouraged to apply, said Debbie Grady, chair of the Dancing Stars of Wayne County fundraiser, held in March.

The Wayne Education Network and Heritage Foundation fundraiser brought in an estimated $77,000, to be used for such educational efforts in Wayne County as teacher recruitment and retention efforts and teacher mini-grants.

The Dr. Charles Zwerling and Melissa Grimes Zwerling Performing Arts Scholarship will be awarded to a senior who lives in Wayne County and plans to pursue a college degree in performing arts. The Zwerlings were co-producers of the first annual fundraiser, providing access to their business, Top Hat Ballroom Dance Studio, as well as instructors.

Applications are available at the Chamber of Commerce office or its website, waynecountychamber.com, and can be mailed to 473 Club Knolls Road, Dudley, NC 28333. Deadline is May 30.
