A 17-year-old Rosewood High School student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Steven Trent Walston, of Talton Road in Princeton, was charged Thursday after K-9 deputies of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Rosewood High School staff conducted a search of the Rosewood High parking lot.

A .380 caliber handgun and a smoking pipe were found in Walston's vehicle, said Maj. Tom Effler with the Sheriff's Office.

"The boy cooperated and said he forgot the firearm was in his vehicle," Effler said. "There was nobody in danger at any time during the incident."

Effler said it was unclear whether a K-9 indicated there were illegal substances in the vehicle or if deputies saw the gun or drug paraphernalia through a window of the vehicle.

Effler said that Walton was in lawful possession of the gun, until he brought it on school premises.

The search of the school's parking lot was one of many random searches that take place throughout the year, Effler said.

Walston was booked into the Wayne County jail about 1 p.m. on Thursday and was released minutes later under a $3,000 unsecured bond.

Walston is due in back in court on April 11.
