An Eastern Wayne High student was arrested by Goldsboro police earlier this month after allegedly firing a handgun near a stopped school bus carrying about a dozen students.
Dequan Alganon Hines, 17, of West New Hope Road, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, trespassing, impeding a school bus, going armed to the terror of the public, possession of handgun by minor and carrying a concealed weapon. He was charged on March 16 and placed under a $2,000 bond.
After dropping off a student in the Ashebrooke Apartments complex on the 200 block of Royal Lane on March 9, bus driver Ronald Canady continued the route through the complex. Moments later, while Canady drove out of the complex, Hines is reported to have fired the weapon.
According to sheriff's office report, while Hines was approaching the school bus he pulled out a semi-automatic pisto and fired a single shot into the air. After the shot was fired, he and another Eastern Wayne High student began to assault the student who had got off the bus.
Wayne County Schools spokesman Ken Derksen commended Canday for stopping the fight.
No injuries were reported.
