James Sprunt to offer classes on vineyard operations

KENANSVILLE -- The Viticulture (grape growing) and Enology (wine making) Program at James Sprunt Community College will offer the following 16-week classes during the 2011 spring semester.
The vineyard establishment and development class teaches grape variety selection, trellis system selection, and site selection for grapevines. Upon completion, the student will be able to make decisions regarding the establishment of a commercial or backyard vineyard. Classes will be held on Tuesday of each week from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., plus an online component.
The grape pests, disease, and disorders class provides an introduction to pests and diseases of grape vineyards. Topics include identification, and management and control of these common vineyard problems. Classes will be held on Tuesday of each week from 7 to 8:15 p.m., plus an online component.
The class in vineyard operations covers basic operations including trellis repair, tractor and equipment safety, pesticide safety, and irrigation installation. The activities necessary to successfully operate a wine-grape vineyard in the southeastern U. S. are covered. Classes will be held one Saturday per month from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., plus an online component.
The wines of the world class introduces the major wine-growing regions of the world. Students will become familiar with the different wine-producing regions. Students will also sample wines from those regions and become familiar with each region's wine style. Classes will be held on Thursday of each week from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m.
