FREMONT -- When police officers arrived at the scene of a Fremont woman's murder New Year's Day, they found the suspect in the shooting standing over her body, still pulling the trigger on an empty handgun.

Teresa Pierce Harrelson, 49, was shot several times at her home in Bentwood Court mobile home park on the northern edge of town about 8:30 p.m., according to police. She died at Wayne Memorial Hospital shortly afterward.

Her live-in boyfriend, Honorio Grajales, 44, was charged with murder, Fremont police Chief Teresa Quinn said today.

Ms. Quinn said investigators believe Grajales first shot Ms. Harrelson inside their mobile home off U.S. 117 North, then continued to shoot her outside, where officers responded to the call and found Grajales with gun in hand.

"When we arrived, she was lying outside while the suspect stood over her attempting to fire the revolver," Ms. Quinn said. "There were rounds that were misfiring. He was still attempting to shoot the victim."

Grajales was taken into custody by a Fremont officer after being tazed. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Pikeville Police Department also responded to the scene.

Ms. Quinn said she believes Grajales had been drinking. She said Grajales and Ms. Harrelson had a history of domestic violence.

"He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Several witnesses were present during the shooting."

The victim's body was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital for a pathology examination, she said.
