New Hope firefighters, along with Wayne County EMS personnel, assist a motorist after he lost control of his SUV in a curve on Millers Chapel Road early this morning. The county emergency crews were busy this morning answering vehicle accident calls, mostly around Goldsboro and areas north because of the slick conditions.
Residents in the Central Heights community were without power for a while this morning after a light pole was taken down in one of the many wrecks reported across the county and blamed on the wintery precipitation.
Schools were canceled, but it was business as usual for county and city offices.
"It is a heavy frost and minor rain event," Goldsboro City Manager Joe Huffman said. "Basically, it is a non-event. Nothing was happening around 5 a.m. It started about 5:30."
However, shoppers at Carlie C's IGA didn't wait until this morning to stock up.
"Last night, we sold out of bread and other staples," said Mike Pendergraft, store manager. "This morning it has been fairly normal, and I am anticipating it to pick up today and be steady all day until the sun goes down."
The Central Heights wreck left 195 Progress Energy customers without power from about 6:54 to 7:41 a.m., but no other outages were reported. Tri-County Electric Membership officials said their customers had not experienced any outages because of the weather.
Rain or freezing rain is likely today becoming all rain after 11 a.m. with a high near 42 and a southwest wind between 7 and 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Little or no ice accumulation is expected.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain or drizzle, mainly between 8 p.m. and midnight with a low around 37 with a west wind between 5 and 9 mph.
