A Goldsboro firefighter helps fight the blaze Thursday afternoon at Heroes Sports Oyster Bar & Grill.

A fire at Heroes Sports Oyster Bar & Grill on Berkeley Boulevard and Ash Street kept Goldsboro firefighters busy for several hours Thursday.

"At this time, we don't have any idea what started the fire," said Chief Gary Whaley of the Goldsboro Fire Department.

Whaley said the department is continuing its investigation.

"We do know the majority of fire was between the ceiling and roof of the building," Whaley said.

The fire is believed to have started around 11:35 a.m., Whaley said.

Firefighters battled the fire for nearly an hour before gaining control of the blaze, Whaley said.

Grey and white smoke billowed from all sides of the building's red roof clouding the mid-day congestion in the adjacent intersection.

City officials stepped onto the roads to help guide traffic through the hazy streets.

All five of Goldsboro fire stations responded to the scene.
