Three patients at Cherry Hospital were allegedly involved in an altercation on Wednesday night, resulting in one being taken to the hospital, state officials confirmed today.

"There was an incident of alleged assault," said Mark Van Sciver, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services. "It's being investigated by Cherry Hospital security. Since it's under investigation, there's very little I can say."

An incident report was made internally, said Mitchell Jones of the hospital's security department, but no charges have been filed.

According to the report, the assault occurred in Building 2/1 East around 8:55 p.m. Wednesday. A 32-year-old subject pushed the first victim, a 47-year-old female, before striking a second victim, a 60-year-old woman.

"Suspect first hit victim in the dayroom area with a closed fist," read the report's narrative account. "Next, the suspect was arguing with Victim #2 and then struck her with a closed fist three times. Victim #1 was then pushed in the chest where she fell down and struck her head on the floor. Goldsboro EMS responded and transported Victim #1 to Wayne Memorial Hospital where she was examined."
