PINE LEVEL -- A Smithfield man was shot to death early Saturday morning at a home on E. Pine Street, according to published reports.
Devin Barber, 20, is the town's first homicide victim in memory, authorities said.
Stefan Gudac, 23, the son of Pine Level Commissioner Anthony Gudac, has been charged with first-degree murder, according to the Pine Level Police Department.
The SBI is helping with the investigation, said Pine Level Police Chief Keith Sparks.
Lawmen responded to a call at 417 E. Pine St. about 1:30 a.m., reports show. Barber had been shot three times, investigators said, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Johnston County Medical Center.
Sparks told reporters that the shooting stemmed from an argument, apparently involving a former girlfriend of one of the men.
Gudac was arrested at the scene and was to have his first court appearance today. He was being held in the Johnston County Jail without benefit of bond.
Barber was the son of Darrell Barber of Pine Level and Connie Barber of Smithfield and the grandson of Ruff and Mae Huggins of Mount Olive.
