NCHP Troopers Shane Smith and Chris Cook take measurements at the scene of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of N.C. 55 East and N.C. 111 South, which took the life of Jettie Best Johnson of Mount Olive.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- A two-car accident near Seven Springs resulted in the death of an 81-year-old woman Monday afternoon.

Jettie Best Johnson of Mount Olive was killed when she pulled into the path of a vehicle operated by Franklin Ray Fulghum, 31, of Seven Springs.

No charges will be filed, said investigating officers with the state Highway Patrol.

The collision took place about 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of N.C. 55 and N.C. 111, several miles west of Seven Springs.

Both Mrs. Johnson and Fulghum were the only occupants of their vehicles at the time of the accident.

Mrs. Johnson was traveling south on N.C. 111 when she pulled her Buick Skylark into the path of Fulghum's Ford Ranger, which was traveling west on N.C. 55, troopers said.

They estimated the Ford was traveling at about 40 miles per hour at the time of impact.

Mrs. Johnson was pronounced dead on the scene.

Fulghum was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital in non-critical condition.

On the scene were officials from the state Highway Patrol, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Pricetown Volunteer Fire Department and stations one and eight of Wayne County Emergency Medical Services.
