Shot while walking home
James Edward Darden, 21, Hopesway Drive, Dudley, told deputies he was shot during an attempted armed robbery on Durham Lake Road. Darden said he was walking home from a party when a car pulled up and several men got out, including one with a handgun.
Darden said he refused to comply when the suspect with the gun demanded money. Darden said the man hit him several times on the right side of his head with the gun before shooting him in his upper right thigh.
The suspects fled and Darden said he entered a house to make a phone call, but there was no phone or no one there. Meanwhile, the person who lives at the house was outside and called deputies to say he had heard someone inside the house saying they had been shot.
Deputies said there were signs of a struggle in the house and blood on a couch and pillow. A 9mm shell casing was found on the floor.
Darden made his way to a nearby house where the resident called 911.
Deputies said that Darden and the man who first called them appeared "very intoxicated." The first caller also denied being in the first residence Darden had entered or that there had been an altercation.
Impersonating an officer
Deputies are searching for a man who is allegedly impersonating a deputy.
Matthew Scott Massey, 26, N.C. 55 East at Seven Springs, told deputies the suspect had been on his family's property and started to leave when he came out. Massey said he flagged the man down who identified himself as a deputy sheriff.
Massey and his wife said they had recognized the suspect's vehicle, a dark blue Ford F-150 pickup truck, from an earlier encounter with the man.
Drive-by shooting
A Goldsboro man told Wayne sheriff's deputies he was shot in the leg while walking along N.C. 111 South over the weekend.
Manylee Devon Lofton, 35, East Ash Street, said he was on N.C. 111 at its intersection with Dollard Town Road when a white Toyota driven by someone he knows only by the nickname "Ty" pulled up near him. The suspect rolled down the window and shot at Lofton five or six times striking Lofton in his upper right thigh.
Lofton told deputies he had had prior "problems" with the suspect.
Lofton flagged down a passer-by who carried him to the Wayne Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.
Thefts
*Rhonda Elizabeth Blackwell, 49, Alert Cable Road, Dudley, reported to Wayne County Sheriff's deputies a break-in and theft of several items from her home. Items taken and their values were DVD player, $100; router/modem, $100; router, $30; 10 music CD's, $150; and 20 assorted DVD movies, $400.
*Miguel Angel Campuzana, 32, Carmel Lane, Dudley, reported to to Wayne County Sheriff's deputies someone had broken into his home. Taken were a $100 generator, $80 cordless jigsaw, $300 in assorted tools and $1,300 in assorted gold jewelry. Damages totaled $75 to a front door and $100 to a back door.
*A thief or thieves took $6,000 in jewelry from the home of Nargal Erten Bombatepe, 49, Parkstown Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The items taken included a $2,500 diamond ring, a $3,500 one-carat solitaire; a $400 Sears gift card; and $15 worth of Ambien pills.
*Karen Harris Steele, 35, a clerk at Kangaroo Express on U.S. 117 South, told Wayne County Sheriff's deputies that a black male brandishing a long screw driver had come into the store demanding money. The suspect fled toward Arrington Bridge Road after taking the money.
*George Blake Grantham, 35, Fallings Creek Road told Wayne County Sheriff's deputies he had been riding a motor scooter along Ferry Bride Road when it broke down near Stevens Mill Road. Grantham said he left the scooter on the shoulder of the road, but that it was missing when he returned. The scooter was valued at $500.
*More than $7,000 in property was taken during a break-in at the home of Malcolm Roscoe Sullivan Jr., 54, Cuyler Best Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. Taken were a 19-inch flat-screen TV valued at $300, a laptop computer valued at $1,000, gold and silver jewelry valued at $6,000 and a class ring valued at $400.
*Iglesius Antjuan Horton, 26, Appleview Drive, Mount Olive, reported to Wayne County Sheriff's deputies the theft of several items during a break-in at his home. Reported stolen were a Wii game console valued at $200, a digital camera valued at $150 and a $1,008.92 check. Damages totaled $15 to a window blind.
