The students at Carver Elementary and Eastern Wayne Middle schools may not be old enough to donate blood, but that doesn't stop them from sponsoring blood drives.
Both schools will have blood drives Nov. 23 from 2 to 6:30 p.m.
They are taking appointments from anyone in the community who would like to give blood at one of the drives. For Carver, call Holly Daly at 658-7330. For Eastern Wayne, call Jennifer Fricks at 751-7110.
When a school hosts a blood drive, its students act as recruiters, signing up their parents, relatives and other adults who are eligible to give blood.
"Participation in a blood drive is a wonderful way for our students to become aware of community responsibility and develop an attitude of helping others," said Kimberly Berrier, senior donor recruitment representative for the Red Cross.
Before the drive, the students receive information about blood and the need for a safe and adequate supply. They also receive training on how to recruit donors.
Students at Carver who sign up donors will receive a Red Cross yo-yo. Those at Eastern Wayne will receive a Red Cross bungee watch.
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold these blood drives in November:
