Open houses, signaling the arrival of a new school year for Wayne County Public Schools, begin later this week.

Parents and students are invited to participate in the events, to become familiar with schools, meet the teachers and obtain class and bus schedules.

Elementary schools and Edgewood Community Developmental School will hold open house on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. The exception will be Grantham School, which will be on Monday, Aug. 23, from 5-7 p.m.

Middle and high schools will also hold theirs Aug. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. Rosewood High School has a staggered schedule to accommodate parents of children at the middle and high schools. Freshman orientation will be at 5 p.m., followed by open house from 6 to 8 p.m.

Freshman orientation at Eastern Wayne High will be that Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by open house from 5 to 7 p.m.

Goldsboro High will also hold a separate freshman orientation, this Friday from 9 a.m. until noon.

"This is an exciting time for our staff and we look forward to welcoming the thousands of new and returning students back to the classroom," said Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent. "Students and parents are encouraged to attend district open house events. The information that is made available for students will allow them to take their first steps toward completing a successful school year."

The first day of classes in the county schools will be Wednesday, Aug. 25. Kindergarten students will attend on a staggered schedule during the first week, with families notified of their child's first day.

Dillard Academy, the county's charter school, will also start classes on Aug. 25 but open house will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition to the typical aspects, Principal Brian Smith will give a demonstration on the school's technology program.
