MOUNT OLIVE-- Duplin County sheriff's deputies are investigating an early Sunday morning assault on an elderly Mount Olive area woman.
Sheriff Blake Wallace said that deputies received a call about 3:30 a.m. Sunday that the woman, who is in her 80s, had been the victim of the break-in and physical assault.
"They found her pretty bruised up and emotionally distraught," he said.
Wallace said EMS personnel responded and the woman was treated and released from the hospital.
He said the investigation had been ongoing around the clock since the assault and that several "good leads" had been developed, but that they are still unsure how many assailants might have been involved.
Wallace said that he could not release any more information because of the ongoing investigation.
Wallace called the incident "tragic" and that said that it "infuriates" him and they will do everything possible to bring all suspects to justice.
