Police are looking for a suspect and a motive in a shooting that took the life of a 19-year-old Maple Street man outside a city convenience store on Monday afternoon, police said.

Stacey Lamar Edwards was killed after being shot somewhere near Madison Meat Market at Madison and Holly streets while headed to shop at the store, police Sgt. Chad Calloway said early this morning.

"(Edwards) lives right there in the area," Calloway said. "I think he was actually going to the store there."

While police were headed to the call, they learned that Edwards was being transported by private vehicle to the emergency room.

The 19-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Calloway said.

Police are not totally sure where the shooting occurred.

"Right now, we'll just say in the area of the store, I can't say 100 percent," Calloway said. "You had some people running and things of that nature, so exactly whether it was in front (of the store) or on the side, we're not sure at this point."

Calloway said that investigators, including lead investigator Dwayne Dean, are still trying to identify a suspect in the shooting.

The suspect is described as a black male in his late teens to early 20s, dark skinned and wearing a black hat.

An autopsy for Edwards is scheduled for today in Chapel Hill to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
