National discount chain store Dollar General is opening a new store in the Mar-Mac area on U.S. 13.
Construction and set-up of the new store are under way. The building will be one of the larger Dollar General stores in the area, at 9,014 total square feet.
The store will employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on need.
The store will feature a layout designed to make summer shopping easier for customers by featuring seasonal products in the center of the store with coolers near the front and more highly visible department signs on display, company representative Emily Weiss said
The store will carry name-brand as well as private-label merchandise, including food items, health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, housewares, basic clothing, packaged food products, refrigerated foods and frozen food.
Most of the merchandise Dollar General sells is priced under $10, with about 25 percent of the store's products on sale for $1 or less.
Additionally, the company is deeply committed to the communities where the stores operate, Ms. Weiss said.
"We are an ardent supporter of literacy and education, which we believe is an important step towards a better life," she said in a statement.
The cash register of the new Dollar General store, like the others in the area, will provide brochures with postage-paid reply cards that customers can mail in to receive a referral to a local organization that offers support in learning how to read, learning to speak English or earning a GED.
Dollar General also gives back through grants to community organizations. More information about the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and its grant programs is available at www.dollargeneral.com.
The corporation does not yet have a date for the new store's grand opening.
