Fifth-graders in Michelle Hill's class at Spring Creek Elementary School were among 200 classrooms nationwide to win a book giveaway through the Scholastic "Care Where You Are" sweepstakes.

The class was chosen from among 12,000 entries in the competition. Students won 500 books they could then donate to local organizations that help children in need.

"My students were so excited to have won these books," said Mrs. Hill. "The students have a passion for reading. Through this book giveaway, they can share their passion for reading with other children who may not have access to books at home."

After receiving the books, the students decided to personally deliver them to the following organizations: 200 books to Hispanic Community Development Center; 80 books to Goldsboro Pediatrics' "Read Out & Read" program; and 160 books divided between the two Wee Wings program buses in Wayne County Public Schools.

The remainder of the books will be shared among grade levels at the school.

Kim Kemp, Wee Wings pre-K teacher, said she could not wait to share the books with her students.

"We are very appreciative of the Spring Creek Elementary students who provided our Pre-K students with these wonderful books," she said. "Both Wee Wings buses have a lending library and it is exciting to offer our children an even larger selection of books to take home with them at the end of class."
