DUDLEY -- A 9-year-old boy was bitten by two dogs walking to his school bus stop on Pine Tree Lane on Monday morning, leading to a quarantine of the dogs to test for rabies.

The assault was stopped when the boy's bus driver, Tyrone Faison, beat off the dogs with a broom, county Animal Control Director Vicki Falconer said.

The bites reportedly were inflicted by one Labrador mix and a companion pit bull terrier mix.

Falconer said she does not yet have the names of the owners, although she had posted a notice on their door saying the dogs had been seized.

"The EMS people said he had some punctures and some bruising," Ms. Falconer said. "We haven't talked to the parents yet. We just went out and got the dog, and we are in the process of doing all the bite reports.

Ms. Falconer said her organization responds to about one a day on average.

The boy is a student at Brogden Middle School.

Wayne County Schools spokeswoman Olivia Pearce complimented bus driver Tyrone Faison for his quick response.
