SEVEN SPRINGS -- The oldest town in Wayne County is preparing for the 10th annual Ole Timey Days Festival.

Seven Springs will celebrate the early days of its 300 years of history May 8, with activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a street dance from 8-11 p.m.

The Eastern Carolina Vintage Farm Equipment Club will once again be a main attraction at the festival, displaying the tools that have helped farmers raise crops for generations. The Wayne County Cruisers Car Club will be attending the festival for the first time this year. The Sudan Mini-Rigs also plan to attend, Mayor Stephen Potter said.

"I'm working on it right now, in fact. Well, we'll have lots going on that day. I'll be meeting (soon) to finalize the plans for the Neuse River canoe tours being done by the Cliffs of the Neuse Park rangers. We're also finalizing the plans for the Miss Ole Timey Days Pageant with Desiree Autrey-Houston," he said.

The Lumbee Ambassadors will attend the opening ceremony, including Miss Lumbee (Allison Mitchell), Miss Teen Lumbee (Alexis Locklear), Junior Miss Lumbee (Madi-son Davenport) and Little Miss Lumbee (Mahlea Hunt).

"They'll do a presentation at the opening ceremony focusing on their Native American culture with song, dance and narration," Potter said.

Miss Goldsboro and Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders plan to attend, and the Sheriff's Department and Wayne County Museum will have information booths at the festival.

Other performers who will take the stage include the Spring Creek High School and Spring Creek Middle School band and show choir, Center Stage Theater, River Run Bluegrass and line dance troupes The Kountry Kickers and Pay it Forward.

Potter said he also has several other "irons in the fire" for entertainment.

The town will also present the Gladys Potter Community Service Award to a member of the community who has completed outstanding service for the town. Previous award recipients include Bobby and Karen Mozingo, the late Atlas Price and the late Rev. Haywood Harrell.

"We'll also be honoring another individual this year by dedicating the day in their honor by mayoral proclamation," Potter said.

The Seven Springs United Methodist Church will oversee the Ole Timey Days "Kids Korner," which will include two inflatables, a coloring contest and games with prizes. Stepping Stone Stables will also return to the festival this year.

The town is partnering with the Seven Springs Fire Department and will sell barbecue trays with bread and slaw to raise money for the department and next year's festival. Other treats such as hot dogs, drinks, popcorn and nachos that are sold at the festival also go toward funding the event next year.
