Hogging the show -- youth livestock show concludes

It's going to be an interesting week at the Barwick household.
Siblings Jensen, 9, and Madisen, 13, both won first place in their division in the Hog Showmanship portion of the annual Livestock Show and Sale Thursday. Jensen won first place in the novice division, and Madisen won first place in the junior division.
"This is my first time ever winning first place and I've shown a hog for the last four years," Jensen said.
The siblings were both in Class 2 for the Best of Show part of the competition, which is determined based on the weight of the hog. Jensen placed first in the category and Madisen placed second. The overall Grand Champion also went to Jensen and Reserve Champion to his big sister Madisen. After hearing about their wins, Jensen who was in a pen with his hog, climbed over his neighbors' pen to shake his sister's hand.
"This has been a really good process and it's been a lot of fun for us," Madisen said of raising the hogs with her brother.
She added that there wasn't sibling rivalry between the two, but said Jensen will most likely give her a hard time about his win. The two had been raising their hogs since mid-January, working with them every day to get them ready for the show and sale.
"Madisen and Jensen do a really good job of sharing the responsibility," said Eileen Coite, Extension Service livestock agent. "They have a lot of teamwork and they both live for when this show comes around."
Thursday was a day full of competition and winners at the Livestock Show and Sale. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the day was the costume contest where exhibitors and their goats dressed up in costume.
Matthew Lutze and his goat won first place; the two dressed as each other for the event. Abigail Johnson and her goat placed second, dressed as husband and wife hunters. Elizabeth Rowe and her goat placed third, dressed as a chef and the meat. Mary Dunn and her goat place third, dressed as Hawaiian luau dancers. And Daniel Dunn and his goat placed fifth dressed as construction workers.
More awards were given at the Award Ceremony Thursday night recogn- izing extra effort, out- standing achievement and sportsmanship.
