A Wayne Early/Middle College High School student has been named the Carolinas District Governor for the region, which encompasses 231 high school Key Clubs throughout North and South Carolina.

Sophomore Brinson Mitchell was elected to serve for 2010-2011 during the annual Carolina District Convention. He previously served as lieutenant governor and in his new role will be responsible for more than 36 school districts.

Clubs at WEMCH and Goldsboro High School, both sponsored by Kiwanis of Goldsboro, also fared well at the convention, bringing home several honors.

WEMCH received the highest award given to a Key Club, the Distinguished Club Diamond Level award, as well as first-place awards for club poster and Kiwanis Family Relations, second-place for major emphasis program, third-place awards for non-traditional scrapbook and club video contest, and UNICEF and March of Dimes banner patches for outstanding contributions.

GHS won second place for single service project, for the Spook-tacular Scarecrow Build-off contest with the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation, and second place in the non-traditional scrapbook competition.

WEMCH also had four students selected to serve as lieutenant governors: Ashley Synger, Karly Derwitz, Shogo Uehara and Elizabeth Breedlove. Students had to complete and record 50 hours of service within the past year, as well as prepare speeches to present in front of convention delegates.

The region has a total of 36 lieutenant governors, each of whom are responsible for up to eight different local high school clubs.

Wayne County has four Key Clubs in area schools. The other two affiliates are at Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne high schools.
