A head-shaving benefit to raise money for childhood cancer research will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Flying Shamrock on John Street.

The St. Baldrick's event is being sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Leatherhead Society, or FOOLS, which is made up mostly of local firefighters, and is part of a national organization that has raised more than $74 million for cancer research since it was founded in 2000.

The head-shaving is a sign of solidarity with children who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment.

Chad Cobb, a member of the local FOOLS group, said the society's members volunteer for the "Fill the Boot," campaign annually, but wanted to do more.

People can help by getting "scalped" or just by donating, Cobb said. Licensed hair dressers will be on hand as volunteer shavers. Participants can sign up at www.StBaldrics.org and donations can be made by calling 1-888-899 BALD.
