The Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad was busy this morning, pursuing a list of 27 people wanted for trafficking in marijuana, cocaine, heroin, certain types of prescription narcotics and several firearms.

Officers from both the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Goldsboro Police Department had gathered early this morning in an attempt to round up the subjects, police said.

"There are 27 subjects charged with 61 total charges," Capt. Tom Effler said in a news release. "Of these 61 charges, 57 are felony drug offenses. Of the 57 felonies, 23 are high-level trafficking offenses."

Other agencies that helped in the roundup of drug offenders this morning included the Mount Olive and Jacksonville police departments, the Greenville Drug Task Force, the Raleigh office of the Drug Enforcement Administra-tion and the state Department of Revenue, Effler said.

The names of the defendants would not be available until later this afternoon, authorities said.

Sheriff Carey Winders issued a comment via press release.

"This is a good example of multiple agencies working together for a common goal, Winders said. "This investigation has been going on for approximately six months. It has crossed over Wayne County borders, which requires outside agencies to work together."

Winders said that the interaction between agencies was crucial to the operation's success.

"Without that joint cooperation, some investigations would not be possible," the sheriff said in the release.
