Pinewood Fire Department, Wayne County EMS and North Carolina State Troopers including Trooper Mason Edwards respond to an accident involving a Windstar van and Ford Explorer on 13 North near the intersection of Central Heights Road on Friday.

A woman allegedly pulled her minivan into the path of a Ford Explorer on U.S. 13 North Friday, causing a crash and suffering injuries that later killed her, authorities said.

Margaret Fernstron, 85, of Natural Drive, Pikeville, was killed in the crash.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, Amy King of Dogwood Estates Lane, was not severely injured, investigating Trooper Jason Edwards said.

The Pinewood Volunteer Fire Department was first on the scene of the crash when an emergency call came in around 11:25 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find Ms. Fernstron's minivan in the northbound lane of U.S. 13 with severe damage to the driver's side.

Ms. King's Ford Explorer rolled several times before righting itself in a yard at 2364 Shirley's Trailer Court, the trooper said.

Damage to Ms. King's vehicle was primarily to the front end, where the vehicle made impact with the minivan's driver's side.

Both vehicles were total losses, Edwards said.

At the scene, Pinewood Volunteer firefighters asked onlookers to stay back from the minivan, because of a major gasoline leak, they said.

No charges will be filed in the accident, Edwards said.
