A Snow Hill man was killed around midnight Saturday after an accident with a rollback tow truck, Goldsboro Police Department officials said in a news release.
Perry Michael Lanier, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene -- near the on-ramp at Berkeley Boulevard and U.S. 70 -- after he was involved in a wreck with the truck police said had stopped to assist a stranded motorist.
No additional details about the incident have been released and those officers who responded to it were not available for comment by press time. Capt. Theresa Chiero said an outline of the crash report would not be available until Sunday and that an "extensive investigation" is underway and is necessary before a complete report is filed.
Saturday's fatal crash marked the fifth fatality in Wayne County since Monday -- local officials responded to three fatal wrecks Tuesday and a Goldsboro man was struck from behind by a vehicle and killed while riding his bicycle Thursday.
