Several Duplin races expected to be tight

The deadline passed Friday for filing to run in the 2010 elections, with some Duplin County races hotly contested while others offer only one candidate for an office.

Duplin County incumbent Commissioner Harold Raynor will face Ronnie Kennedy Jr. and David J. Jones for the District 3 seat. Tim Smith of Pink Hill has filed to run for the District 2 seat on the commission.

Board of Education incumbent Chuck Farrior will run unopposed for the District 4 school board seat. Incumbent Jennings Outlaw will run for another term in the District 2 school board seat. Pam Edwards of Beulaville will run for the District 3 seat on the board.

Incumbent Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace will run unopposed for another term in office. Also running unopposed are Ernie Lee of Jacksonville, seeking a seat as District 4 District Attorney, and incumbent Clerk of Superior Court Katie Quinn Harrell of Beulaville.

Democrats Marcus W. Williams of Lumberton, Ken Lewis of Chapel Hill, Cal Cunningham of Lexington and Elaine Marshall of Raleigh, and Republicans Brad Jones of Hendersonville, Eddie Burks of Asheboro, incumbent Sen. Richard Burr of Winston-Salem and Libertarian candidate Michael Beitler of Oak Ridge will run for U.S. Senate.

Two Republicans, incumbent Rep. Walter B. Jones of Farmville and Bob Cavanaugh of Newport, Democrat Johnny G. Rouse of Winterville and Libertarian Darryl Holloman of Goldsboro announced their candidacy for U.S. House District 3.

Republicans Randy Crow of Kelly and Will Breazeale of Wilmington will seek votes represent U.S. House District 7, while incumbent Rep. Mike McIntyre of Lumberton will be the only Democrat seeking the seat.

Two Democrats and two Republicans have filed to run for election in N.C. Senate District 10 where Sen. Charlie Albertson, D-Duplin, is retiring. Gordon E. Vermillion of Kinston and Dewey Hudson of Clinton, both Democrats, will join Republicans Brent Jackson of Autreyville and Chris Humphrey of Kinston in running for election.

In the state House District 4 race, where Rep. Russell Tucker, D-Duplin, is retiring, Republican candidate Jimmy Dixon of Mount Olive will face Democrat Mott Blair of Wallace in November.

Robert C. (Bob) Hunter of Marion and Barbara Jackson of Raleigh will seek a position as Supreme Court Associate Justice.

Sanford Steelman of Weddington, Jane Gray of Raleigh, Ann Marie Calabria of Morrisville, Mark E. Klass of Lexington, Leto Copeley of Hillsborough, Rick Elmore of Raleigh, Alton D. (Al) Bain of Lillington and Martha Geer of Raleigh will seek election as Court of Appeals judges.

Russell J. Lanier Jr. of Wallace will seek a position as Superior Court Judge for District 4A. Paul A. Hardison and Sarah C. Seaton of Jacksonville will run for District 4 District Court Judge.

Most local terms are for four years. State legislative terms are for two years. The general primary is May 4. Election Day is Nov. 2.
