Nine vying for Miss Eastern Wayne High 2010

Nine contestants will compete for the title of Miss Eastern Wayne High School 2010 on Friday. The pageant will be held at 7 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium at Wayne Community College.

The theme for the 16th annual scholarship program is "Celebrate Good Times."

Sponsored by the school's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club, more than $3,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to the top three winners.

The Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening will be Michelle Braxton.

*Josalyn Best, 18, will sing "Wind beneath My Wings" made popular by Gerald LeVert & Eddie LeVert. The daughter of Shawna Rowe, she plans to attend Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte to major in mass communication.

*Nichole Carter, 17, will perform a flute solo to "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from "The Nutcracker." The daughter of Mary and Ruben Carter, she plans to attend East Carolina University and study anthropology and business.

*Lani Fricks, 18, will sing "Beautiful, Beautiful" made popular by Francesca Battistelli. The daughter of John Fricks and Lorie Richardson, she plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to study computer technology.

*Sydney Hines, 17, will perform a jazz dance routine to "She's Got Something New" by the Spice Girls. Her parents are Keith and Tara Hines. She plans to attend East Carolina University to study psychology.

*Adea Kelly, 17, will perform a tap dance routine to "Single Ladies" by Beyonce. The daughter of Evelyn and Joseph Kelly, she plans to attend East Carolina's dental school.

*Lauren Richards, 17, daughter of John and Gail Richard, will perform a lyrical dance routine to "Seasons of Love" from the Broadway musical "Rent." She plans to attend Meredith College to study nutrition.

*Niya Smith, 17, will sing "Hero" made popular by Mariah Carey. After high school, her plans are to attend A&T University to study political science and English. Her parents are Arnold and Edna Durham.

*Warner Underwood, 18, daughter of Wooten and Willis Underwood, will perform the piano solo "Valse Caprice" arranged by Ella Ketterer. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina to pursue a degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on government and international relations.

*Majesty York, 17, will sing "His Eye is on the Sparrow" arranged by Horace Boyer. The daughter of Phill and Lori Grant, she plans to pursue a nursing degree.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. They may be purchased from contestants or the pageant director, Carolyn Wegman at EWHS, 751-7120.
