Seven area students have been recognized for their artistic talents during the National Scholastic Art Awards competition for the eastern/central region.
Denzel Russell, a senior at Wayne Country Day School, and Lawrence Wurtele of Charles B. Aycock High School received the prestigious Gold Key awards for their photographs.
Silver Key awards went to Victoria Darby and Tichinia Lewis, both of Brogden Middle School; Hannah Grantham of Southern Wayne High; and Hannah Hall and Jo Turner of Spring Creek High.
The students competed against hundreds of entries from across 62 counties that were entered in the regional competition, held at Barton College in Wilson.
The awards competition is a national recognition program for artists and writers. Since 1979, Barton has hosted the event, which gives teenagers the opportunity to have work exhibited in prestigious galleries. Gold Key winners will compete at the national level of competition in Washington, D.C., in June.
More than $3 million in scholarships are available to graduating seniors who earn national medals.
