The AARP Tax-Aide service will offer free tax counseling and simple income tax preparation help for senior citizen taxpayers and low-income taxpayers on Mondays and Tuesdays, beginning Monday through April 13. Senior taxpayers, 50 years old and older, will have priority.

Assistance will be offered at the Wayne County Public Library between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The goal is to assist 30 to 35 taxpayers each day. Assistance will be given for both federal and North Carolina income tax returns. Both spouses must be present if filing a joint return.

Because of demand, lengthy and complex returns cannot be prepared until mid-March. Taxpayers must bring all 2009 tax documents, especially Social Security statement SSA 1099, 1099R, for senior citizens. Be prepared to let the tax counselor know if you or your spouse received $250, or $500 if married filing jointly, under the Economic Recovery Act.

The Internal Revenue Service requires that all taxpayers bring a valid photo identification, as well as a Social Security card or ITIN card for all taxpayers and dependents.

Tax aid will be filed electronically. If you wish to have a refund direct deposited or payment taken out of your bank account, bring your checkbook or voided check.
