PULSE, a new young professionals group in Wayne County, was launched in August 2009 by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and its Business Development Committee.

The committee saw a need in the community to lead Wayne County's young professionals for the simple fact that people are more likely to stay in a community when they feel connected and involved, according to PULSE secretary Jessica Bravo.

PULSE is embarking on its first full year of existence. The group's focus is on networking the upcoming business class in the area, according to board chair Tommy King.

"We strive to achieve this goal through informal social gatherings, which provide a relaxed atmosphere for young professionals to come and enjoy. Through doing so, we believe that this group will be a vital economic and social asset to the community's overall quality of life," King said, referring to the mission statement.

The group is open to people age 21-40, who are employed or students. Applications can be found at the Chamber of Commerce Web site, though Chamber membership is not a requirement for PULSE. Annual dues are $30 which allows access to events where refreshments are often included.

King said the group is not only practical on a business level, but is also on a personal level, especially for people who are new to the area and may be looking for a doctor or dentist or other type of service.

"You get up close and personal and get to know more about people you may have to do business with some day," he said. "You see more people that you can do business with than you ever thought you would."

PULSE has monthly social events, but they also do special events including golf tournaments and a Halloween costume party. Coming up on Feb. 27 from 7-11 p.m., the group is hosting a formal, The Fancy Dress Ball, at Walnut Creek County Club. The public is also invited to the event. Tickets are $25 per person.

King said he's also planning on getting the group involved in some charity work in the area.
