SMITHFIELD -- Johnston County put a new wastewater force main into service on Jan. 6. The pipeline is located east of the town of Clayton.
A leak was discovered in the pipeline in the vicinity of Glen Laurel Road on Jan. 8. Upon detection of the leak, flow was immediately diverted to another pipeline.
An estimated 10,000 gallons of wastewater flowed into an unnamed tributary of the Neuse River. The spill was reported to the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources' Division of Water Quality.
