Honor Society donates flags to classrooms

A professional honor society of women educators is donating North Carolina flags to each fourth-grade class in Wayne County Public Schools.
The Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International has purchased the state flags to accompany the U.S. flag already in classrooms. When the service project ends, the chapter will have donated nearly 100 flags to be placed in schools across the district.
The district is appreciative of the Iota chapter's commitment to education, said Joyce Cunningham, WCPS lead teacher for social studies.
"Through this donation, our fourth-grade teachers will be able to use the display to further enhance instruction on the meaning and historical origins of the North Carolina flag," she said.
Dr. Marlee Ray, president of the Iota chapter, said the service project is designed o promote excellence in education.
"We hope that having a N.C. flag in the classroom will be a positive teaching tool and will help instill state pride in students," she said. "We appreciate all that our schools do to provide a quality education to the students in Wayne County."
