The Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County will be one of the sites for an educational campaign launched by comedian Bill Cosby, with a LISTENing Party planned for youths this week.

The comedian/educator's latest CD Project, "Bill Cosby Presents the Consnarti: State of Emergency," is part of an effort with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to foster community dialogue and promote several themes -- self-respect, education and service to others.

Cosby's emphasis has been to steer away from the cursing and violence typically depicted in some rap lyrics, said Willemina Williams, the club's teen director.

The LISTENing party will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the Royall Avenue office, for students ages 12 to 16.

"What he's trying to do is present to the young people a clean type of rap music -- encourage them to graduate, go to college, get a job, be respectful, serve your community," Ms. Williams said.

The hour-long forum will be an opportunity to listen to the CD -- lyrics will be distributed to the students -- followed by a discussion. Refreshments will also be served.
