WCC names new vice president

One of two vice president vacancies at Wayne Community College due to retirement has been filled, officials announced Tuesday night.
Retiring Jan. 1 will be Ken Ritt, vice president for educational support services, and Roy White, vice president for continuing education and workforce preparedness/basic skills/small business center.
Dr. Kay Albertson, WCC president, told the board of trustees that one of the positions has already been filled internally.
Ray Burrell, currently head of the college's business and computer technologies division, will take over for White on Jan. 4.
Burrell has worked at WCC since 1999 in such capacities as a computer services instructor and interim director of computer programs in the Continuing Education Divison; a curriculum business instructor, business and accounting department head, and business and computer technologies division head.
He previously served in the Air Force for 24 years.
Burrell has been widely recognized for his efforts in leadership and contributions in several areas.
Recently he was named Administrator of the Year at both the college and the district level and received the John R. Larkins award for contributions by a state employee to human and race relations in the workplace and community.
Founder of the college's Minority Male Mentoring Group, he has also been a core team member for the Achieving the Dream initiative targeting closing the achievement gap for low income and minority students.
In the community, he served on boards for the N.C. Community Federal Credit Union and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County.
"Ray's combination of experience made him an outstanding candidate for this position. We are fortunate to have him moving into this new role," Albertson said. "This is an exciting and challenging time for the college. I'm looking forward to working with Ray as we plan and write the next chapter in the college's history."
The continuing education division's program areas include occupational extension, computer, community service, public safety, human resource development, the Small Business Center, Military Business Center, industry services and basic skills.
