A gun was found on Meadow Lane Elementary School property Tuesday morning, but school officials said no children were believed to have come in contact with the weapon.
Ken Derksen, public information officer for Wayne County Public Schools, said the weapon was discovered by a custodian mowing grass. It was lying in a front driveway, an area where students do not usually walk, Derksen said.
The school immediately notified police, he said, turning over the weapon, which was a .38-caliber handgun.
A letter also was sent home to parents, noting that no student had come into contact with the weapon, encouraging them to use this "as a learning opportunity to speak with your child about what they should do if they ever find a weapon. Please tell them they should immediately tell their parent, a teacher, or a trusted adult, and under no circumstances touch or pick the weapon up."
