State honors Wayne Mental Health Association

The Mental Health Association in Wayne County was recognized by the Mental Health Association of North Carolina at its annual conference.

MHA Wayne County received the Operation Santa Claus Award given to a staffed affiliate that has made the most outstanding contributions to the Operation Santa Claus program.

It also received the Clara Simon award given to an outstanding volunteer at a state hospital or community mental health center. MHA Wayne County has been a volunteer organization at Cherry Hospital since 1962.

Wayne also received the Silver Bell Award designed to highlight the outstanding work that local affiliates do on a regular basis. There are rigorous eligibility criteria for this award including a plan for making the community aware of the MHA existence, purpose, and objectives; activation, continuation or completion of at least two mental health community service programs; at least one program which is open to the public that focuses on mental health or prevention of mental illness; a written budget; and at least two affiliate-based publications.

The David W. Hardee award was presented to MHA Wayne County for the most outstanding staffed affiliate during the previous program year.

Bill Johnston and Curtis Media East was honored with the Radio Award that is given to the North Carolina radio station that has resented quality coverage of mental health concerns during the previous program year.

Nancy Moore was presented the McFarland/Edgerton Award. It is presented to the volunteer who has made significant contributions to the mental health movement in North Carolina. She was nominated by MHA Wayne County for her dedication to MHA Wayne County and Crisis Intervention Training with Eastpointe with Law Enforcement Officers.
