Katie McDowell, widow of U.S. Air Force Capt. Mark McDowell, accepts an American flag that draped her husband's casket during funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009. McDowell and weapons system officer Capt. Thomas Gramith were killed when their F-15E Strike Eagle crashed while flying a close-air support mission over eastern Afghanistan on July 17, 2009.

Hundreds of family members and comrades of Capt. Mark McDowell gathered on Fort Meyer at the Old Post Chapel earlier this morning before making their way to Arlington National Cemetery where they paid their final respects to the fighter pilot who lost his life in Afghanistan. Tears were shed as rain fell on the crowd, which by midmorning had once again come together to honor the loved one they lost at a reception in his memory.
