County names its math teacher of the year

Caroline Brown, a third-grade math teacher at Tommy's Road Elementary School, has been named Wayne County Public Schools' 2009-10 elementary mathematics teacher of the year.
She has been in the education profession for 14 years, serving for the past five as a North Carolina Partnership for Improving Mathematics and Science lead teacher for the district. She is also lead teacher through the North Carolina Partners for Mathematics learning grant.
In those capacities, she has presented professional development training for her colleagues at the school, as well as the district level.
Ms. Brown earned an associate in arts degree from Mount Olive College, a bachelor of science in elementary education at East Carolina University, and a master of arts in education, middle grades mathematics, at ECU.
She is a member of the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a peer mentor for beginning teachers.
At Tommy's Road, she has helped plan a "Math Spring Fling," allowing third-grade students to rotate between teachers to compete in various math activities. She also utilizes technology as part of her curriculum, and employs a variety of techniques and manipulatives to help students be successful in the classroom.
As Wayne County's representative for elementary math teacher of the year, Ms. Brown will be recognized during a special breakfast sponsored by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics at the 2009 Math Conference in Greensboro later this month.
She will also receive a one-year membership in the NCCTM and a personalized award. Additionally, she will be recognized in the fall issue of the NCCTM journal and on its website.
