SEVEN SPRINGS -- A Lenoir County man was killed Thursday evening in a single vehicle accident on N.C. 55 just west of Seven Springs.

Luis Angel Ramos Jr. died at the scene, Highway Patrol investigators said.

Ramos' sport utility vehicle was traveling west when he approached its intersection with Price's Road. His truck ran off the right-hand side of the road and struck a stand of pine trees. The vehicle came to a rest wedged between several trees facing east.

Seven Springs and Pricetown volunteer fire departments responded to the accident. N.C. 55 was closed for several hours while investigators with the patrol took measurements of the accident scene.

It took the Seven Springs Fire Department nearly a half hour to extricate Ramos' body.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper Leroy Bunn.

In a separate accident that happened Wednesday, Antonio Applewhite, 22, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding on Durham Lake Road when a vehicle pulled out onto the highway and struck the motorcycle head-on.

He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he died during surgery for injuries sustained in the accident.

State Trooper Jock Smith is investigating the accident. Mar-Mac Volunteer Fire Department and First Reponder team were at the scene, along with county emergency personnel.

Further information on the accident and possible charges involved were unavailable at press time today.
