RALEIGH -- A Rocky Mount man has pleaded guilty in federal court to possession of child pornography.

Christopher Mark Surels, 26, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III.

A federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment against him in August of last year after a detective with the Nash County Sheriff's Office and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation identified Surles as a registered sex offender using MySpace.com and approached him at his residence for questioning.

Investigators discovered child pornography on his computer.

Because of his previous sex offense, he now faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Sentencing will be Dec. 14.
