Suspect sought in home invasion

A Belfast Road woman reported her house was broken into Tuesday afternoon while she was at home.

Robin Stephens told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that a young white man assaulted her after gaining entry to her home by knocking on her door and conversing with her around 3 p.m.

Ms. Stephens said the man, described as between 5-feet-6 and 5-feet-10 inches tall, with a small build and short dark hair, took an undisclosed sum of money from her after punching her in the face. The man was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans and fled west on a moped after the robbery, according to the report.

Sledgehammer used in burglary

A Sheriff's Office deputy said he noticed damage to a glass door at the Rosewood Food Lion on Wednesday evening, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The Sheriff's Office later found the head of a sledgehammer inside the grocery store, leading authorities to believe it had been used to gain access to the building. Food Lion owner Willie Jones Summerlin was called to the scene, and reported about $25 in loose change had been taken from a cash register drawer. The Sheriff's Office believes the sledgehammer may have been taken from a work truck parked at the grocery store on Wednesday evening. A witness gave a description of a suspicious vehicle, a gold four-door sedan that left heading west on Rosewood Road, the Sheriff's Office reported.
