Free swimming lessons for young children will be offered later this month.
But space is limited, so parents are advised to register early, said David Poythress of Partnership for Children of Wayne County.
The Partnership is sponsoring the two-week course along with the YMCA. The last time the two agencies had offered swimming lessons was in 2006-07, Poythress said.
Children will be taught basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. They will also learn pool and boating safety and the use of personal flotation devices.
Group lessons are set to begin July 27 at Mina Weil Park on House Street, with two sessions each for ages 3-5 and 6-9. They will be taught Monday through Thursday, with the second week of lessons Aug. 3-6.
Classes for 3- to 5-year-olds will take place from 12-12:30 p.m. and 12:30-1 p.m. Six- to 9-year-olds will have their lessons from 1:15 to 2 p.m. and 2-2:45 p.m.
While pleased about the possibility of bringing back the free lessons, Poythress said the down side is that space is limited, and typically that means having to turn some people away.
He encouraged interested parents to register early, by calling Gina at the Partner-ship, 735-3371, ext. 227.
