Fall enrollment set to begin Monday at WCC

Several changes will greet students registering for fall 2009 college credit classes at Wayne Community College: an extended registration period, a deadline to apply for financial aid, higher tuition, and the option to order their textbooks online.
New students can register from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 13-15; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., July 16; 8 a.m. to noon, July 17; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 20-23; 8 a.m. to noon, July 24; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 27; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Aug. 3; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 4-6; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Aug. 18; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 19.
New students must complete the enrollment process, take placement tests and be accepted in order to register for classes.
Returning students can register beginning Monday through Aug. 19.
Registration for classes at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will be Aug. 3-19, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for active duty military personnel and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 and 19 for visiting students, at the Watkins Das Base Education Center. To get a visitor's pass, civilians must submit a background security check form at least seven days prior to the first day of class.
Classes offered on campus and the base, as well as distance education courses, start Aug. 20.
While early enrollment and registration is encouraged, the college has expanded its opportunities to accommodate students, said Peggy Teague, vice president for academic services.
"We have services for folks who are sure what they want to take, like the Career Center, or they can come out and talk to instructors. Our faculty are more than willing to help students see if they are making a good career choice," said Dr. Teague.
New this year is a deadline to apply for financial aid. To ensure that the process is completed by the time tuition and fee payments are due, students must have applied for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by July 17. Application can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and students can visit the college's financial aid office.
Several increases were also announced.
The N.C. General Assembly included curriculum tuition increases in its temporary spending legislation last week. Curriculum tuition is now $50 per credit hour for up to 16 hours for in-state residents. The out-of-state rate is $241.30 per credit hour. This is an $8 per credit hour increase over 2008-09.
There is still good news, though, said Dr. Linda Nelms, vice president for student services.
"Several federal financial aid options have been increased and there are additional resources out there, including state and private sources for grants and scholarships. But they have to apply," she said.
A new option also is being added through the college bookstore, allowing students to order books and other merchandise online at www.wayneccbookstore.com. Materials can either be shipped to the student of delivered to the WCC office in the base education center.
