Behind bars fundraiser continues

It was a long, hot weekend for Tammie Hedges, director of Purrrfect Friends Feline Shelter and Adoptions cat rescue.
Ms. Hedges has been camped out in a small, locked pen outside of the Tractor Supply Company on Cashwell Drive since Friday morning in order to raise money to support homeless cats and dogs.
She decided she would remain in the pen until she reached her fundraising goal, and by Monday morning, the effort had collected about $800, still short of the $1,000 it will take for her to come out of the cage.
Most of the money came in Saturday, and Sunday was a bit slow, Ms. Hedges said. The fundraiser had collected about $700 by Saturday night.
"I'm hoping to get out of here today," she said. "I need a shower."
Some of the cats from Purrfect Friends and dogs from the Wayne County Pit Bull Rescue, also a non-profit rescue, have been keeping her company over the weekend. On Monday, a rescued pit bull named Lady and a tabby cat named Tiger, both available for adoption, were on hand as representatives.
The money the fundraiser collects will be used to buy food and other necessities for the more than 20 cats currently fostered by the registered non-profit, no-kill rescue. Half of the money will go to support the homeless dogs of the Wayne County Pit Bull Rescue, also a no-kill, volunteer-based rescue.
The organizations also gladly accept donations of pet food, bowls, cat litter, cleaning supplies, cages and other necessities. After Ms. Hedges escapes her cage, the organization will leave the donation jar inside Tractor Supply Company to continue collecting money to help the animals.
