State Highway Patrol Troopers C.A. Cook, left, and L.J. Bunn look over the scene of a two-vehicle accident Saturday morning that left two people dead. The accident happened at the intersection of N.C. 222 and N.C. 581 in northwestern Wayne County.

FREMONT -- Two women were killed Saturday morning in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of N.C. 222 and N.C. 581 west of Fremont.

Donna Karen Capps, 49, of Henderson, and Agnes Byrd Carney, 71, of Beaufort died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 9 a.m.

The driver of the car in which Mrs. Carney was a passenger, Michael Eugene Sowers, 61, of Beaufort, was seriously injured and taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition was not known at presstime.

Ms. Capps was driving a 2000 Pontiac and traveling south on N.C. 581 at the time of the crash. The vehicle driven by Sowers, a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, was traveling west on N.C. 222.

State Trooper L.J. Bunn and Trooper C.A. Cook investigated the accident.

Bunn said charges are pending.

All of the people involved in the accident were wearing a seat belt, Bunn said.

Polly Watson, Nahunta and Fremont volunteer fire departments responded to the alarm, along with Wayne County Emergency Medical Services.

After the collision, both vehicles struck a ditch and overturned, coming to rest on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Bunn gave no estimation of the speed of either vehicle but noted that the speed limit on both highways is 55 mph.
