"The Goldsboro Jaycees and Wayne County citizens know that July Fourth is an important time for many people to spend with family and friends," Whitfield wrote.

"This holiday is a special time to celebrate the independence of our nation and to thank those who have served and who currently serve our nation. It is of particular importance to the Jaycees and our community since Goldsboro is the home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and we have our service men and women to thank for the many freedoms we enjoy.

"Therefore, it is with much regret that the Goldsboro Jaycees are needing to cancel this year's Goldsboro Jaycees Fourth of July Parade and Festival, scheduled for Saturday July 4th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ..."

Whitfield went on to say that the club appreciates the community's support of the parade over the past two years, as well as those involved in planning this year's event and that all money collected for parade and vendor entries will be returned to everyone who has submitted an application for participation.

The message ended with Whitfield urging residents to continue to support the Jaycees' other annual events, including the Fire-Police-Sheriff Banquet, the Distinguished Service Award Banquet, Christmas Wish and the annual Christmas Parade.

Efforts to contact Jaycees officials were unsuccessful.
